Double bill of romantic comedies, both starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. ‘The Wedding Singer’ is set in 1985. Robbie Hart (Sandler) makes his living as a singer at wedding receptions. When he is jilted by girlfriend Linda (Angela Featherstone) on his own wedding day, however, Robbie’s musical performances degenerate into bitter tirades. Robbie’s career is rescued by waitress Julia (Barrymore), who asks him to help with the preparations for her own impending nuptials. Robbie and Julia begin to fall for each other, but neither reveals their feelings – even though Robbie knows that Julia’s fianc is cheating on her. In ’50 First Dates’, Barrymore plays Lucy Whitmore, a beautiful woman suffering from acute short-term memory loss. After a car accident several months before, she has been left with a rare brain condition that causes her memory to be totally erased every night when she goes to sleep. Sandler plays Henry Roth, a vet who works at the aquarium in the Hawaiian resort where Lucy is living a quiet life with her over-protective father (Blake Clark) and goofy brother (Sean Astin). Henry usually spends his summers seducing a string of female tourists that he’ll never see again – but when he meets Lucy he realises he’s found something special, and resolves to give up his promiscuous, non-commital lifestyle. The only problem is, when he meets her again the next day, she hasn’t got a clue who he is. Henry embarks on an elaborate quest to win her heart, with the help of his stoner best friend Ula (Rob Schneider). Dan Akroyd makes a cameo appearance as Lucy’s doctor.
