Double bill of period dramas directed by Andy Tennant. Jodie Foster stars in ‘Anna and the King’ (1999), a big-screen adaptation of Anna Leonowens’ semi-autobiographical novels. Recently widowed, English schoolteacher Anna arrives in Bangkok in 1862 to act as tutor to the son of King Mongkut (Chow Yun Fat) of Siam. A culture clash is inevitable, but Anna impresses her new employer with her strength of character, and the two gradually develop a mutual respect. When Danielle meets Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), they quarrel – but a second encounter, with Danielle dressed as a noblewoman, sees romance blooming. However, the relationship is threatened when Henry’s father tells him he must marry the Princess of Spain…
