The 1950s saw a world largely recovered from World War II and in the grip of the Cold War. The Cuban Revolution, Che Guevara and FIdel Castro were in the news, as was the launch of Sputnik, the first official space satellite to orbit the Earth. The emergence of Rock n Roll brought wild new artists like Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochrane and the unforgettable Elvis Presley, and on 3 February 1959, a chartered plane transporting the three American rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson went down in foggy conditions near Clear Lake, Iowa, killing all four occupants on board.
