It starts with Flying Scotsman hauling the R.C.T.S. The East Midlander from Nottingham to London to Gloucester and back to Nottingham. Johnny Morris then describes a number of specials and charity runs which includes Flying Scotsman’s record breaking journey from Paddington to Cardiff. The film ends with footage of Flying Scotsman’s restoration and the introduction of the second water tender. Australia 1988: This programme reveals Flying Scotsman’s record-breaking tour to Australia in 1988 to help celebrate the country’s bicentenary. After a brief overview of Flying Scotsman’s achievements, including footage of her adventures in America in 1969, we see the locomotive being shipped over to Australia. Watch as numerous classes of restored Australian locomotives make their way to Melbourne before revelling in the action of Flying Scotsman filmed from the lineside, tracking shots from cars as well as from the footplate as she streaks through the Australian countryside. Its a tale of financial nightmares and engineering excellence and it’s told with the help of her owner, the chief engineer and the traction inspector who was on the footplate at key moments.
