Triple-bill of children’s features. In ‘Madeline’ (1998), Madeline (Hatty Jones) is the most mischievous of the twelve friends who live at a Parisian school run by Miss Clavel (Frances McDormand). Her sunny existence is threatened by starchy old Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne), who is on a campaign to have the school closed down. It is up to Madeline and her friends, who include the equally precocious Pepito and a dog who saved her from drowning, to stop him. In ‘Matilda’ (1996), Matilda (Mara Wilson) is an exceptionally gifted and intelligent child, but is ignored by her stupid parents Harry (Danny DeVito) and Zinnia (Rhea Perlman). A keen reader, her dearest wish is to be sent to school, but the establishment Harry selects is Crunchemhall, run by the brutal Miss Trunchball (Pam Ferris). Her cruelty to her pupils causes Matilda to vow revenge, and her newly discovered telekinetic powers give her the chance to do so. Finally, in ‘A Simple Wish’ (1997), seven-year-old Anabel (Mara Wilson) wishes for a fairy godmother after the death of her mother, but doesn’t expect anything like Murray (Martin Short), the world’s first male angelic guardian. Instead of guaranteeing Anabel’s dad a part in a new Broadway musical, Murray manages to turn him into a statue. The problems really begin with the arrival of Claudia (Kathleen Turner), a former fairy who has turned to the dark side and stolen all the other godmothers’ wands. All she needs now to become all-powerful is Murray’s wand.
