The Last of the Mohicans / Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves / The Green Mile DVD

Triple bill of allegiances and heroism. ‘The Green Mile’ (1999) is the screen adaptation of Stephen King’s best-seller. In 1935, Louisiana prison guard Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) meets convict John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) – and the experience changes his life forever. Coffey, an eight foot giant, is on Death Row convicted of the murder of two children – and he is afraid to sleep in his cell without a night-light. Coffey also has a special gift, one which he uses to prove to the guards that he has been wrongfully convicted. ‘Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves’ (1991) is a big-budget version of the Robin Hood myth. The film begins when Robin (Kevin Costner) returns from the Crusades, accompanied by a Moorish companion, to find his father dead, having been accused of devil worship. Vowing revenge, Robin soon finds himself with a price on his head and joins the oppressed peasantry in battle against the evil Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman). ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ (1992) is set in mid-18th century America. Woodsman Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) lives amongst British colonists in New York state, but shares the cultural values of his adopted Mohican father, Chingachgook (Russell Means). At the height of the French-Indian war, Hawkeye is asked to lead two British sisters, Cora and Alice (Madeleine Stowe and Jodhi May), through dangerous territory to their father’s fort. With the French-allied Hurons on their trail, one of whom has a personal vendetta against the daughters, Hawkeye and his companion Uncas still find time for romance with their charges, much to the chagrin of the accompanying Major Duncan Heyward (Steven Waddington), who has set his cap at Cora.
