The match soon developed into a mesmerising contest as both players performance peaked and dipped throughout the night. It became a nerve-jangling, breathtaking thriller; at times a war of attrition, at times incredibly skilful, powerful and deft. Then, after four hours and 54 minutes, Murray finally emerged triumphant, sinking to his knees in delight, disbelief and sheer exhaustion. Britain’s 76-year wait for a men’s singles grand slam victory had come to an end in unforgettable style.
