The Wizard of Oz / Black Beauty / Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory DVD

Triple bill of classic children’s films. In ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ (1971), young Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) wins one of the coveted Golden Tickets from a Wonka Bar, which allows its holder to take a trip around the eccentric Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Charlie and the rest of the winners find themselves in a magical world of chocolate rivers, Oompa Loompas, everlasting gobstoppers, lickable wall-paper, golden egg-laying geese – and chilling tales to warn children not to misbehave. Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay from his own book. In the classic musical ‘The Wizardof Oz’ (1939), a tornado whisks Dorothy (Judy Garland), her little dog Toto – and her house – from Kansas to Munchkin City, squashing the Wicked Witch of the East upon landing. The Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) vows revenge, while Dorothy sets off on the yellow brick road for Oz with The Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), The Tin Man (Jack Haley) and The Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) – all of whom have their own specific reasons for wanting to meet the magical Wizard of Oz. ‘Black Beauty’ (1994) is directed by Caroline Thompson, who wrote ‘Edward Scissorhands’, ‘The Secret Garden’ and ‘The Addams Family’). The film is another reworking of the Anna Sewell classic about a horse which has been badly treated. Set during the late 19th Century, where poverty was high in London’s East End, the tale follows the ups and downs of the life of the horse Black Beauty.
